Bio for Sr. Ellen Francis, OSH

I am a life-professed sister of the Order of Saint Helena (Episcopal) and live at our convent in North Augusta, SC.

I studied drawing and painting at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and egg tempera iconography with The Rev. John Walsted and at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in New York City.

My icons include Western as well as Eastern saints, and in some cases depart from the orthodox canon in order to express my own interpretation of the life and spirituality of the saint. For example, in my icon of Mary and Martha, I brought Martha into the circle of conversation with Jesus, because I feel that Martha's work is holy hospitality; she is providing the bread.

I hope you enjoy this sampling of my work. Please contact me if you are interested in a commission. "New Icons" and "New Drawings" include recent work and some may be for sale. Prices are negotiable.

Thank you for your interest in my icons and drawings! I welcome your comments and questions.
