About my icons
I work in egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed wood, following in the ancient forms and tradition of iconography, and I also attempt to adapt this craft to modern Anglican spirituality.  I have painted icons of women and men saints who have not been included in the orthodox canon of iconography, and I try to depict a more inclusive for role women who have been traditionally reduced to subservient roles. For example, in an icon of Saint Mary Magdalene (see above left), I attempted to show her not as the penitent harlot but rather as the Apostle to the Apostles. I have presented Mary and Martha both in conversation with Jesus, rather than placing Martha in the background (see above center).  I have shown Mary the Mother of Jesus receiving the message of the Angel Gabriel with strength and courage (see above right).  My icons also include modern men and women of the Anglican and Episcopal Church, such as The Rev. Li Tim-Oi (see icon at left), the first woman to be ordained to the priesthood in the Anglican Communion, in China in 1944.

I studied painting and drawing at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, and then apprenticed with an iconographer, The Rev. John Walsted.  Later I also studied at the open iconography studio at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in NYC.  My icons are drawn by hand, and are painted with egg tempera on gessoed wood.  I follow techniques of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, and also draw from techniques used in Western Medieval and Renaissance egg tempera painting.  These techniques are largely known through the Craftsman's Handbook by Cennino d'Andrea Cennini, a late 14th or early 15th century treatise which describes the preparation of pigments and painting in the tradition of Giotto.
